Bamboo Grove

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Japan During my travels through Japan, one of the most inspiring places I experienced was the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto. Walking beneath the towering bamboo and looking upward through the canopy introduced me to the Japanese concept of komorebi—the beautiful phenomenon of sunlight filtering through the leaves and branches of trees. The experience was both calming and transformative. As the light shifted with the movement of the bamboo, the landscape became a living composition of shadow, color, and rhythm. It reinforced the idea that some of the most meaningful design lessons come directly from nature. This moment became the inspiration for several of my public art concepts, particularly Bamboo Lights, where I sought to recreate the feeling of standing beneath a forest canopy within an urban environment. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove continues to influence my work by reminding me that great design has the power to slow us down, encourage reflection, and reconnect us with the natural world.

Pink Sunflower

Pink Sunflower is a hyper-realistic photographic artwork created by seamlessly combining 25 individual images into a single, highly detailed composition. Through focus stacking and digital image blending, the piece reveals textures, colors, and intricate details that are impossible to capture in a single photograph. While the printed image is striking, it is best experienced in person. At full scale, viewers are immersed in the flower’s intricate landscape, creating the sensation of seeing the world from the perspective of a bumblebee. Tiny details that often go unnoticed become monumental, transforming an everyday flower into an expansive and almost surreal environment. The work invites viewers to slow down and appreciate the extraordinary beauty hidden within ordinary moments. By magnifying nature beyond the limits of human vision, Pink Sunflower encourages a renewed sense of curiosity, wonder, and connection to the natural world.

Lightning Over Big Bend

Captured just outside Big Bend National Park, Texas, this photograph documents a powerful desert thunderstorm that transformed an evening of stargazing into one of nature’s most unforgettable performances. What began as a clear night quickly evolved into an extraordinary display of lightning, wind, and dramatic skies. As the storm intensified, lightning repeatedly struck a solitary mountain rising from the desert landscape. Standing in the midst of the storm, I genuinely wondered if the winds might carry me away. Despite the conditions, I was able to capture this fleeting moment—a single frame that reflects both the immense power and the breathtaking beauty of the natural world. The image serves as a reminder that some of the most remarkable photographs are born from patience, preparation, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. It captures the awe, unpredictability, and raw energy of nature in a moment that lasted only an instant but will be remembered for a lifetime.

THE JOURNAL

"As the Mindful Architect, I believe in creating media and marketing that enhances and enriches people’s lives. It’s about crafting content that doesn’t leave an "icky" sensation, but rather inspires, educates, and provides real value. A Unique Installation

I am excited to announce my latest creation, an installation that fuses earthworks and sculptures to capture the vibrant, multicultural essence of North Hill. Inspired by my life's journey and global experiences, this installation is designed to be a safe space for artistic self-expression and relaxation.

Through this project, I aim to highlight the importance of progress and diversity, reflecting the values of Akron's collective community. This installation is a testament to unity and transformative change, driven by the heartbeats of our cherished community.

Thoughts from the https://northhillcdc.org:

“Howard St. Heritage Courtyard is a creative placemaking initiative focused on celebrating the diverse heritage of North Hill and the history of African Americans on Howard Street. The activation of this space seeks to cultivate investment and activity on Howard Street, inspire community engagement through art, and mitigate social inequity by featuring BIPOC artists.

Designed by Jason Flakes, this 14’ modern totem pole design, made of cinder block finished with stucco, is an homage to the indigenous populations and represents the local history. The red line on the bottom of the pole articulates the history of redlining and the horrible effects of Urban Renewal in the neighborhood. The brightly colored yellow and orange “NH” will activate all four sides and the top of the totem will be cut in a crown shape symbolizing strength and prosperity. There are two 15’ x 4’ walls attached at the bottom with four sides to be activated with murals that rotate twice a year.”

Stay tuned for more details as we light the way toward a more connected and inspired future.
